PostSubject: Intersting facts about how movies/songs originated   Sat Jun 30, 2012 10:05 pm

Wanted to post some interesting facts about how movies/songs originated and how artists were selected.

Here are a few. Will post more if found interesting.

1) MAYURA - All of us know about this great movie. Let me tell you how this originated (Source : Muthuraja ondu muthu, book by B. Ganapathi). One day in Madras a boy collecting old newspaper and books landed at Dr. Rajanna's house. While Rajanna was speaking to this boy he found that in the ragbag of this boy the book 'Mayura' written by Devudu. Annavru then got this book from the boy and what happened later was history.

Who knows if not for this boy we may have never seen a classical like 'Mayura'.

2) Dr. Raj was supposed to do 'Chigurida Kanasu' in the 80s. However do you different reasons the project did not kick off. 20 years later when Nagabharana was ready to start the film it did not suit Raj and Shivanna stepped in.

Akasmika was initially planned for Shivanna however after several rounds of discussions it was decided that Annavru will step into this project (since it was a very mature subject and Shivanna was new at that point of time).

Source : Have heard Nagabharana mentioning this in several interviews.

'Haalu Jenu' was first planned for Ananthnag .Dr. Raj refused to do because he did not want to barge into other actor's space. However later when AnantNag could not do the project due to his schedule the project came back to Raj and then came the evergreen movie 'Haalu Jenu'.

3) Huttidare kannada nadalli huttabeku......

this song needs no new introduction but this is how it originated

Hamsalekha, T S Narasimhan and others were present at Dr. Raj's residense to finalise Akasmika songs.

In walked annavru one morning in his trademark white dress....

Watching Dr. Raj, Hamsalekha made a statement "huttidare rajkumar thara huttabekappa". This sentence caught the attention of all in the room and with some changes originated the song "Huttidare kannada nadalli huttabeku......".

As told by Hamsalekha in an interview.

4) The tune 'Anisuthide yako indu' was first propsed by MM for America America. NC did not find the tune suitable for that movie.

Later it was proposed again for the Mathad Mathad Mallige and the same result.

Finally the tune was picked up by YB.

The lyrics for this song was sent via SMS by YB/JK to Mano Murthy in US.

5) Kalpana refused to do Obavva's role in 'Nagarahuvu'. (since it was a small role).

The first choice for 'Sampathige saval' durgi's role was Aarathi.

Dr. Vishnu was keen on doing 'Bhojaraja's role in 'Kaviratna Kalidasa'.

Soruce : Various interviews seen on TV & books on Dr. Raj & Puttana Kanagal.

6) Kasturi Nivasa - This film needs no special mention to all Kannada film lovers.

The script for this movie was first written for 'Shivaji Ganesan'. For some reason it was rejected. Dorai-Bhagavan liked the script very much and naratted to Rajkumar and said that they were willing to produce the movie only if Dr. Raj played the lead role.

The rights of the Tamil script was purchased for 30000 Rs.

The movie went on to become one of the all time greats in KFI.

Later the same movie was remade in Tamil with Shivaji Ganesan. The same movie was also remade in Hindi with Sanjeev Kumar as the lead.

Source : As told to Jayant Kaikini on his show Dr. Raj telecast on ETV sometime back.

Big names in India film industry those days were waiting for the release of Dr. Raj's new movie. Many of his movies were remade to other languages.

Raj's film Pratidhwani was the inspiration for Hindi film Deewar. (changes were made in Hindi version)
Nanobba kalla was the inspiration for Shakti.(changes were made in Hindi version)
Haalu Jenu - There is an exact copy of this movie in Telugu with Nagaeshwara rao.
Anuraja Aralithu - was remade in Telugu, Tamil & Hindi
Vasantha Geetha - was remade in Hindi as Pyar Jhukta Nahin and back in Kannada as 'Ne barada kadambari'.
Raja nanna raja - has inspired the recent Magadheera.
Shankar Guru - Mahaan in Hindi

I am sure there are many more in the list.

From this stage we have now reached a situation where remakes rule our industry. Sad very sad....

This is one of the primary reasons what make Dr. Raj even more great.

Not sure if this is a repated post.

We all know Rajkumar started his career with 'Bedara Kanappa' in 1954. However he also acted in a small role in the movie 'Srinivasa Kalayana' prior to 1954. He was one of the saptharishi's. This was during the time when he was working in Subbayanaidu's company.

Raj went eagerly to watch the movie and before he realised his scene had come it was gone. He was terribly disappointed.

Source : As told by Rajkumar in the movie "Natasarvabhowma' , a collection of his interviews released after his 100th movie.

While composing songs for Bhakta Kumabara, Hunsur Krishnamurthy was puffing his cigaratte, it so happened that flame from the cigaratte fell on his hands and caused minor burns.

This incident was the inspiration for the song "Manava dehavu moole mamsada tadike".

When Nagabharana first approached Dr. Shivaram Karanth to get the movie rights of 'Chigurida Kanasu' , Dr. Shivaram Karanth insisted that he would prepare the screenplay and did the same.

Guess what the screenplay turned out to be a 9 hour movie !!!!

Nagabharana had to drop the idea for a few years and was taken up later.

When Parvatamma Rajkumar was travelling in train in 70's, a woman beside her gave a novel to read.... And the novel was the base for the epic "Eradu Kanasu"

Also Nagarahavu and Bayaludari scripts were rejected by Parvatamma. Later we know what these films did...

During the premier of Nagarahavu, the writer of the novel Ta.Ra.Su was very upset with the movie and called it "Kerehavu"... Even Puttanna Kanagal was very depressed hearing this.. One week later... History was made and a star was born...

Rajnikanth was supposed to do the role of villain in Raj's Girikanye.. But when Rajni came to the sets, Thoogudeepa Sreenivas had bagged the role. Disappointed, Rajni went to Raj and cried.. Raj said " Dont worry! You have the talent... You will rise to such heights that one day I will come to your house for your callsheet"... That became true, when Rajkumar himself called Rajni to invite him to 100 days function of " Appu "

Year : 1955-56. Location : AVM studio. Movie 'Bhookailasa' was made simultaneously in Kannada and Telugu.

Rajkumar as Ravava in Kannada version and NTR as Ravana in Telugu.

It was a practise those days to first shoot Telugu version and then Kannada. On a particular day there were some delay in shoothing the Telugu version and it was decided to start with Kannada.

Rajkumar completed a shot as Ravana. This was being watched by NTR.

After the shot was completed NTR told the director - here on shoot the Kannada version first - Rajkumar is a great source of inspiration to me. This was the impact of Rajkumar on NTR

ZEE TV SA RE GA MA PA

For those of you who watched ydays episode there is nothing new in the article.

Yday we had two stars from the Kannada film music world on the show - Hamsaleka (maha guru) and Harikrishna (celebrity guest).

The way the two discussed some finer points of singing was very interesting.
Harikrishna was a mechanic before he joint Hamsalekha as a student.
Hamsalekha admitted that while he found it difficult to blend western music into Kannda film music Harkrishna has been able to do this very successfully.(eg Galipata title song).
Hamsalekha was all praise for this shishya.
Got to know that SPB sang the song "Geethanjali" from CBI Shankar in one take (it is a difficult song).
Hamsalekha also mentioned some interesting facts about how Ravichandran gets involved during orchestration and what instruments he wants for a dream song etc.

In one of the earlier shows Shivarajkumar mentioned that he wants to do a movie like Shankarabharaman with Hamsalekha. Hope this materialises.
